Everyone is talking about it, WASCOSA is doing something about it – for intelligent freight wagons. The WASCOSA Asset Intelligence Day on the topic “How can we make rail transport more intelligent? Telematics on freight wagons”, with over 300 participants from 17 countries, met with a great response. The industry-related presentations were supplemented by an integrated marketplace event involving numerous important providers of telematics systems from Europe and North America, and one neutral provider of an open and universal telematics platform for road and rail.
 
WASCOSA, Europe’s first provider of freight wagon systems, considers it as much a privilege as a duty to showcase future-orientated overall solutions for improving rail freight transport. “At WASCOSA we are focusing completely on telematics to increase the efficiency of railway consignments and significantly reduce the costs for rail logistics”, explained Peter Balzer, CEO of WASCOSA.
 
9 speakers – 1 workshop – 15 years of practical experience from North America
Participants were shown the entire telematics spectrum. The first two speakers told the visitors how much advantage road transport carriers had gained in the field of telematics and where rail travel needs to head in order to ensure that rail freight transport could also significantly increase its reliability, safety and efficiency with the help of telematics.
Renowned players in the field of rail freight transport explained in progress reports how and why they were tackling the topic of telematics on freight wagons, where its benefits were and how stumbling blocks were circumvented.
The next presentation “Freight wagons are becoming intelligent – what is possible now?” by Irmhild Saabel, Business Development Leader at WASCOSA, explained, among other things, why WASCOSA is focusing completely on telematics and what benefits this will entail, that the potential of telematics for rail transport is available and the time is right to take advantage of the technical progress. The speaker’s final words emphasized that the solution for rail transport is available, as freight wagons are proactively managed using asset intelligence and this increases competitiveness.
Jan Lindqvist (RushRail AB), a speaker from Sweden, presented a newly developed telematics solution which allowed a private RU, in partnership with the infrastructure operator, to very efficiently monitor track infrastructure in real time.
The international audience of business partners and industry representatives benefited from 15 years of experience and the practical use of telematics on freight wagons in North America in the subsequent presentations.

The sequence of speakers was rounded off with the presentation “Telematics platform NIC-base – Optimisation and flexibility through independence”. Markus Lechner, Managing Director of the software and consultancy firm kasasi from Bavaria informed the audience about a neutral and open telematics platform that could be used for road and water transport as well as rail transport. All mobile and stationary transport units equipped with telematics have one thing in common: independence! Independence from the transport carriers deployed, independence from the telematics hardware solution implemented, and independence from existing technologies in order to manage the complete wagon fleet using a telematics-based platform and to make it more transparent. The aim of this approach is to make rail transport more intelligent and consequently more efficient.
Thanks to the individual requirements analysis “How can I make my rail transport more intelligent?”, numerous groups of participants assessed their individual potential benefits.
 
Integrated marketplace event for numerous telematics system providers
Finally, the marketplace event integrated into the day’s programme of events gave conference participants the opportunity to meet numerous important providers of telematics systems from Europe and North America in one place.
