SBB Cargo transports 210,000 tonnes of freight every day. In this respect, the federal railways are dependent on private freight wagon hirers. For cost reasons, SBB Cargo has sold or scrapped more than half of its own transport wagons over the last 20 years. This gap is being filled by private companies which are operating and hiring more and more freight wagons – and this trend is set to continue.
